History Books Tell ItBe extra nice to me right now. I’m a little tense. As a long-time hardcore news junkie, I’m going through a withdrawal that’s along the lines of quitting coffee, cigarettes and Facebook all at once. We’re into month two since The New York Times, my “dealer of choice,” launched its dreaded paywall. While I can [...]

Composition NotebooksOne of my favorite TV shows is Catch It Keep It on the Science channel. If you haven’t seen it, it’s a reality game show where everything from plasma TVs, motor scooters and high-end guitars to a year’s worth of beer is placed at peril by a highly creative Method of Destruction (MOD). Flamethowers! 50-foot [...]

National anthemI was recently asked to pick which actor would best play the story of my life. I chose Neil Flynn, who plays the dad in the sitcom The Middle. We share similar parenting styles. Whenever he’s determined to impart Important Life Lessons to his kids, his solution boils down to one word — “sports!” Of [...]

Dahon Vitesse D7On Wednesday, Steve Jobs will take the stage at the Yerba Buena Center for the Performing Arts in the heart of San Francisco. It’s the same place he goes whenever he’s ready to unveil the latest game-changing technology. This week, he’s expected to unveil the long-anticipated tablet computer, which some have dubbed the “iPad.” It’s expected [...]

Happy Blue MondayThis may come as a shock to any Gen-Y readers out there who have grown up on Twitter and Facebook, but there remains a lot of skepticism — and fear — about social media among your elders. The cut-off age seems to be around 35 where people either want to dive in, even if it’s daunting [...]

DSC_0053.JPGAs a parent — and a professional communicator — I highly recommend the children’s book Simple Pictures Are Best. It tells the tale of a couple having a portrait made for their wedding anniversary who, despite the photographer’s advice that “simple pictures are the best,” insist on adding more and more to the setting until, [...]

Exploding the Windows of HomeYou know something really big is happening in our industry when the tables are turned and the media is covering us for a change. Sunday’s The New York Times featured Claire Cain Miller’s inside scoop on how social media is transforming PR for Silicon Valley startups. It’s an intriguing behind-the-scenes look at how PR pros are [...]

184; Stress level: MidnightAs PR pros, we’re familiar with pressure-packed situations. The headline’s not working, but the deadline looms. The reporter who sounded interested in the big story stops responding. Out of nowhere, a couple of people are Tweeting nasty things about your client. Probably better get on that… It’s just part of the day-to-day routine. If we had a theme [...]

Oregold RoseAs Hartley Mikus noted in a recent post, we’ve launched a new mentoring program here at Fahlgren Mortine. I’m excited about participating as a mentor, perhaps because I’ve been fortunate to have had some excellent advisors and guides over my 25-year career. Since we didn’t have such a formal approach “back in the day,” most [...]

State of PlayI went to see State of Play over the weekend, spurred by an interesting Ad Age article suggesting it was “The Last Hurrah of Hollywood’s Hero Journalist.” It’s a good movie — a pulse-pounding political thriller with plenty of plot twists. Russell Crowe plays Cal McAffrey in the lead role of heroic investigative reporter at [...]
