Nice article, Steve. I always did enjoy your blend of a wit and smarts. Since being there and spending an evening creating the first email etiquette do's and don'ts (I ever saw) I can safely agree that there must be a higher purpose to advertising than pure entertainment. I would like to believe any product, including services, views the world as one that is shared and therefore respected... and as such needs to be lifted intellectually as well as emotionally. I think kinda Adam Sandler-ish! Wish I could find that OS9 version of email etiquette.

I loved Kool-Aid as a kid, my adult kids give it to their kids (my grand-kids), and my younger kids still get it from me.

That's at least three or four generations of solid brand awareness.

"Oh, Yeah!"

Fortunately for FOX and the Emmy's, Bobby (a young male) was not their key demo. And fortunately for us, we have Bobby to better understand how to reach that elusive young male, who has a hard time finding his niche in primetime TV. Thanks Bobby for this post and your insight!

I agree- the Kool-Aid Man is a memorable, loving brand. Did you see the recent TIME magazine article that lists the creepiest product mascots? Sadly, they listed the Kool-Aid Man - which I definitely do not agree with. What's creepy about a giant pitcher of delicious beverage? http://www.time.com/time/specials/packages/article/0,28804,2090074_2090076_2090101,00.html

It's one of my most beloved brands, too. All of us kids used to pile into grandma's house, who'd fan out her stash of colorful Kool-Aid packets; then we'd fight over who got to pick the flavor. Makes sense that fried Kool-Aid is such a hit at state fairs this year!
